Zo denk ik dat er mensen zijn die in Egypte als slaaf zijn onderdrukt en die later in Kanaän zijn gaan wonen.

Het is dan ook van belang om in het verhaal te duiken en het precies te blijven lezen.   
Er is dus een groot verschil in het precies (letterlijk) lezen om de historie te achterhalen of    
precies (literair) lezen om de betekenis (wat heeft de schrijver hiermee willen zeggen). Het laatste is een leerboek en het eerste is een geschiedenisboek.

@Dat beloof ik is in zijn jeugd met de bijbel als geschiedenisboek opgevoed. Hij kan daar niets meer mee (en terecht).  
Helaas lukt het hem dan niet meer (en dat kan ik ook begrijpen) om de bijbel als een literair leerboek te lezen.   
Hij is gevangen in de historische kritiek.      
De christelijke filosoof Paul Ricoeur https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Ricœur beschrijft 3 fasen van bijbellezen:

Een 'fantastisch boek': de eerste naïviteit, begrijpend lezen als sprookje in de miraculeuze kindertijd (story)      
Een 'historisch boek': de kritische fase (history)      
Een 'levensboek': de tweede naïviteit, een antwoord op grote zinvragen voor mensen van nu en vroeger, hier en elders (transhistory)

Of ik het helemaal eens ben met dat de bijbel antwoord geeft op de grote zinsvragen is wellicht nog een aparte discussie waard, maar ik zie veel mensen die in de kritische fase blijven hangen (dat herken ik ook bij mezelf).

En dan blijven de vragen staan ook van @Dat beloof ik: wat wil het verhaal ons nu zeggen.  
Is deze God van Israël eigenlijk wel te vertrouwen. Zijn het bevrijde volk en de leiders wel te vertrouwen?  
Het zijn vragen die later (ook als Israël weer in puin ligt en de mensen zijn weggevoerd in ballingschap) steeds opnieuw worden gesteld.  
Zijn dit ook niet de vragen die we vandaag horen…

Op 29-4-2024 om 20:00 zei Robert Frans:

Mozes zegt dat hij en Aäron zélf water uit de rots zullen laten stromen. Hij eigent zich dus het wonder toe, in plaats van te zeggen dat Gód het water zal laten stromen, en toont zo dus geen ontzag voor Gods heiligheid.

Dit is het eigenlijk. Mozes en Aäron geven niet God de eer maar focussen op zichzelf, alsof zij dat water uit die rots lieten komen. Dus idd geen ontzag voor Gods heiligheid. Dat werd hen zwaar aangerekend. Zo zie je maar hoe makkelijk we in de fout gaan. Nu hebben we het loskoopoffer van Jezus die onze zonden bedekt, maar dat was in die tijd nog niet. Het geeft maar aan hoe belangrijk dat loskoopoffer is.

Daarom is het goed om het te bespreken. Vaak zijn er meerdere zienswijzen maar vaak zijn dat andere invalshoeken. Je moet vasthouden aan de rode lijn die je in de Bijbel ziet en vanuit dat oogpunt redeneren.

Dit was eerder een bewering om aan te duiden dat deze teksten best lastig zijn.  
Eigenlijk zouden we eerst met zijn allen Genesis en Exodus moeten gaan lezen en dan pas Numeri.   
Ik schaam mij niet om niet direct met een snel antwoord te komen.    
Nu wil ik je uitnodiging om toch eens verder te graven best aannemen.    
Ik doe dat liever dan de discussies over geaardheid of het bekritiseren van steeds dezelfde personen met hun ‘cherrypicking’ of    
voorspelbare reactie.

N.B.   Ik heb al eerder aangegeven dat je in de bijbel een gids nodig hebt.  
Ik ben zeker niet zo’n gids, maar heb wel eens iets opgepakt van mensen (theologen) die dat wel zijn.   
De grootste bijbelverkrachters beweren natuurlijk dat zij het wel zonder gids kunnen.   
Het is dan ook snel mystiek (m.i. een ander woord voor hun beperkte inzicht).   
Teksten uit de TeNaCh en een specifieke verbinding met het Jodendom zijn aan hen niet besteed.

Er moet altijd hoop blijven, maar nu zitten we nog in de woestijn en hebben dorst en een verlangen naar vroeger.    
Dat het in Egypte niet beter was, zullen de lezers natuurlijk wel begrijpen.

Ogenschijnlijk lijkt Exodus 17 mijn uitleg van Numeri 20 te weerspreken, maar bij nader inzien hoeft dat niet het geval te zijn. Immers in Exodus 17 is de Tora nog niet op Sinai aan Israël gegeven. Dat gebeurt pas in Exodus 20 en volgende hoofdstukken. Er valt dus in Exodus 17 nog niet op basis van Tora te spreken. Opmerkelijk is de rol die de staf van Mozes in beide verhalen speelt. In Exodus 17:5 wordt deze staf uitdrukkelijk "de staf waarmee jij de rivier geslagen hebt" genoemd. Het was de staf waarmee Mozes de plagen over de Egyptenaren had gebracht en waarmee hij de Schelfzee had gespleten voor de doortocht. Die staf is een duidelijk symbool voor dwang en bestraffing. Diezelfde staf slaat in Exodus 17 de rots, d.i. de verharding van het volk dat volgens vers 3 naar Egypte terugverlangt. Het is weer die staf die Mozes in Numeri 20 moet meenemen (vers 8), nu niet om ermee te slaan, want hij moet niet slaan maar spreken. Dat kan mijns inziens maar één betekenis hebben: laten zien dat het na de openbaring van de Tora op Sinai anders moet toegaan in Israël. Als men met de Tora in zee gaat, komen woorden en overtuigingskracht in de plaats van dwang en straf. Dat is mijns inziens nog altijd een heel actueel uitgangspunt.

Ik heb zelf nog even naar de Naardense vertaling gekeken.

Exodus 17
zie, ik zal voor jouw aanschijn staan, daar op de rots, 
bij Horeb; slaan zul je op de rots; wateren zullen er uitstromen en drinken zal de gemeente! 
Zo doet hij, Mozes, voor de ogen van Israëls oudsten.

Numeri 20.    
neem de staf en vergader de samenkomst, jij en Aäron, je broer, 
en voor hun ogen zult ge dan spreken tot de rots,

Dan steekt Mozes zijn hand op en slaat tweemaal met zijn staf op de rots;

Mozes komt alleen tot zijn bestemming (dat is het beloofde land) als hij de woorden van deze God (Torah) ongefilterd doorgeeft.   
Hier ontstaat die verwijdering tussen hem en deze specifieke God van Israël.
Ik denk dat het eerder door @Robert Frans goed is toegelicht. Mozes wordt als een self-made wonderprofeet neergezet.   
Nu vroeg ik me af, waarom komt er dan wel water uit de rots. Mozes had hier toch ontmaskerd kunnen worden?
Hier is het toch ook dat de God van Israël opkomt voor zijn volk dat hem ontrouw is.   
Het OT is niet anders dan het NT ( @Dat beloof ik ).
Het morrende volk (de generatie uit Egypte, dat daarna terugverlangt) zal echter nooit het beloofde land bereiken.    
Het is geen sappig sprookje, met ‘ze leven nog lang en gelukkig’. Het is een leerboek voor de dagelijkse praktijk.

Dat niet loslaten geldt zeker voor Mozes. Zijn graf is niet bekend. Ook in de dood laat God zijn profeet niet achter.

Ik ben jaren gelovig geweest, dus ik weet heus wel waar teksten over gaan. Maar het is een reflex van gelovigen om als er kritiek komt die kritiek weg te wuiven met de woorden "je hebt geen idee"... Enkel als je precies zegt wat de gelovige zegt of de dominee op de preekstoel dan heb je er wel verstand van..  Ook dat is psychologisch best te verklaren. Maar maakt het daarom niet waar. Als je een goed gesprek wilt dan kan je beter openstaan voor de mening van een ander, in plaats van die af te serveren als iemand die er geen verstand van heeft.

Ik vind het een vreemd verhaal, van die rots waar Mozes op slaat. Mozes die alles deed wat God van hem vroeg. Dan zegt hij een keer "wij zullen jullie te drinken geven" en mag hij het beloofde land niet in vanwege "je hebt niet gezegd dat God jullie water zal geven".. Dat is toch schrijnend? Het is een heel vreemd verhaal (eigenlijk best ongeloofwaardig).

Nu verkondigt juist het NT dat deze God zich in Jezus een menselijke gestalte heeft aangenomen (het is verhalend hè) en heeft zo de laagste positie opgezocht en gekregen.   In zijn Naam (in zijn leven) staat Jezus model (pars pro toto) voor alle mensen die deze laagste positie hebben gekregen door vernedering, uitbuiting, geweld of armoede.    
Juist Jezus is 1 van die kleine mensjes die jij benoemt.
Je kan dat wel weer afdoen, dat het allemaal niet zo veel voorstelt (overigens is een kruisiging gruwelijk) maar heb jij inmiddels een ander en beter verhaal , dan het verhaal van de bijbel?

Als je ook maar een beetje van jezelf hoog opgeeft dan is dat niet goed volgens de Bijbel. Daarom dat Nietzsche ook christendom het geloof van/voor slaven noemt.

Dit soort dingen lees ik wel vaker. Dat mensen de Joodse of Christelijke God anders willen doen voorkomen dan de zogenoemde heidense goden. Maar wat bedoel je hier precies mee?

Ik las in het OT juist  propaganda voor de Joodse God. Waarom die God zich juist wel Goddelijk opstelt.. Kijk maar naar al die verhalen over hoe de Joodse God de andere goden versloeg. Pure propaganda. Helaas doen nog steeds veel mensen alsof dit op geschiedenis berust. Alsof goden met elkaar wedstrijdjes aangaan. 

Juist ook omdat de Joodse volk heel nietig was in het gevecht hebben ze dit soort propaganda geschreven. Want papier is geduldig, dus je kan allerlei verhalen opschrijven en het papier zal niet zeggen "dit klopt niet!".. En dankzij christendom hebben we weet van de Joodse propaganda. Waarschijnlijk schreven de andere volkeren precies dezelfde propaganda voor hun goden, maar die zijn in de nevelen der tijd verdwenen.

Tevens maakt die God zich ook niet bekend, maar maken de schrijvers die God bekend.

Uit het NT kan je niet halen dat Jezus de laagste positie had. Zelfs als mens niet. Vele mensen kwamen naar Hem toe. Hij verrichte vele wonderen. Deed geen zonde etc. En inderdaad, het stelt toch niet zoveel voor? Als je drie jaar lang dient, dan een dag gemarteld wordt en gedood, dan na drie dagen opstaat en vervolgens meer dan 2000 jaar aanbeden word? 

Dat kruisiging gruwelijk was weet ik wel. Maar zelfs de kruisiging van Jezus ging niet zo gruwelijk als bij anderen. Die hingen vaak dagen lang te creperen voordat ze stierven. Hadden geen andere idee dan de dood en het eeuwige niets. Terwijl Jezus "wist" dat Hij na drie dagen weer opstond en dan voor bijna eeuwig zou heersen.
