Organic produce 'better for you'

Researchers looked at a variety of food, including tomatoes

Organic produce is better for you than ordinary food, a major European Union-funded study says.

The £12m four-year project, led by Newcastle University, found a general trend showing organic food contained more antioxidants and less fatty acids.

But researchers did admit the study showed some variations.

The findings call into question the current stance of the Food Standards Agency (FSA), which says there is no evidence that organic food is better.

Researchers grew fruit, vegetables and reared cattle on adjacent organic and non-organic sites across Europe, including a 725-acre farm attached to Newcastle University.

They found levels of antioxidants in milk from organic cattle were between 50% and 80% higher than normal milk.

Organic wheat, tomatoes, potatoes, cabbage, onions and lettuce had between 20% and 40% more nutrients.

But the study, which is yet to be published in a peer-reviewed journal, also showed there were significant variations.

Project co-ordinator Professor Carlo Leifert said: "We have shown there are more of certain nutritionally desirable compounds and less of the baddies in organic foods.

"Our research is now trying to find out where the difference between organic and conventional food comes from.

"What we're really interested in is finding out why there is so much variability with respect to the differences. What in the agricultural system gives a higher nutritional content and less of the baddies in the food?"

He said he hoped the findings would help farmers in organic to improve the quality of their produce.

Final results of the project are due to be published over the next 12 months.

The FSA, the body which provides advice and information on food, currently states: "Consumers may also choose to buy organic food because they believe that it is safer and more nutritious than other food.

"However, the balance of current scientific evidence does not support this view."

But officials are currently evaluating organic food for nutrient and non-nutrient content, with a report due to be published next year.

However, the Soil Association said the findings of the EU project showed the watchdog should change its stance.

A spokesman said: "The FSA has always been quite sceptical of organic food when there is no need to be. This study again shows that and I would hope they change their stance soon."

Hehe, daar zou je idd al mee kunnen beginnen.

Je kan het jezelf wel leren hoor, dingen kopen die je niet nodig hebt. Heb ik mezelf ook aangeleerd.

Je moet er gewoon eens goed bij stilstaan, ook als je in verleiding komt iets te kopen. Je gewoon heel bewust zijn van je eigen gedrag, denken aan de mensen die zelfs geen eten hebben enzo... En dan kan je het gewoon niet meer over je hart krijgen je geld eraan uit te geven. Allesinds zo gaat dat bij mij.

Behalve op school dan, ik haatte school en school was geen prettige tijd (nu nog niet hoor).

Mijn moeder: omdat ze altijd positief denkt en enorm sterk is, welke tegenslagen ze ook tegenkomt.

Soms wordt zoiets ook al mishandeling opgevat. Bvb een man die zijn vrouw bijna geen geld geeft, en over alles wat ze doet beslist.

Blijkbaar best nog moeilijk na te gaan. Ik denk dat het makkelijker is om per merk te gaan zoeken.

En als je iets koopt wat je erna niet draagt, dan kan je dat aan het goede doel geven.

Of je kan bvb een systeem maken zoals ik doe vaak. Voor elk ding wat je koopt doe je iets weg.

Niet altijd. Als je je gewoon met geloof bezig houd en je herkent waarheid in het christendom dan kan je je bekeren zonder het kwaad te beleven ofzo.

Ik heb dus Nee gestemd

Mijn vertrouwen in de mensheid is soms toch wel nog iets te groot. Nu had ik gedacht dat zoiets in Belgie echt niet meer zou kunnen... kledij gemaakt door kinderarbeid of onderbetaalde mensen. Best naief eigenlijk. Maar ik begrijp niet hoe ze zoiets kunnen toelaten, als ze zich er bewust van zijn.

Ik zocht even op google: mensvriendelijke kledij.

Toen kwam ik dit tegen:

Ik zal de vraag van "hoe weet ik welke kledij mensvriendelijk/ecovriendelijk is" even stellen op andere fora ook.

Hmmja, dat weet je dus niet echt. behalve als je de merken opschrijft en research doet.

En als je het niet weet koop je het gewoon niet Het zal zowiezo wel niet levensnoodzakelijk zijn denk ik

Gewoon zoeken op internet: eco friendly kledij, eco friendly material, natuurvriendelijke (zelf in te vullen).

Of op fora aan mensen vragen enzo.

Het is heel belangrijk om daarbij stil te staan, dat is mijn mening. We zouden stil moeten blijven staan bij alles wat we doen in ons leven. Zelf ben ik daar daar ook mee bezig.

tweedehands kopen doe ik ook meestal Bvb nu mijn moeders verjaardagcadeau.

Ik zal zo'n ding ook weigeren denk ik. Ben er absoluut geen fan van.

Bij ons gaat er niemand naar de kerk ofzo, maar we vieren kertmis wel altijd met ons gezin Soms gaan we ook bij vrienden eten van onze ouders.
